18th Asian Games: Hima Das shatters the national record for 2nd time to win silver in 400m
Another good day for India’s track and field athletes in the Asian Games.
Here today Hima Das and Muhammed Anas win Silver.
18-year-old Hima Das is the second competitor after Bhogeswar Baruah to have won an award in Asian Games. Bhogeswar Baruah, an Arjuna Award victor, is an 800 m gold medallist in the 1966 Asian Games.
Hima Das holds the 400m national record for a 2nd time in 2 days for a silver while Muhammed Anas got the second place in the same event for men.
Hima Das continued her good show and herself broke the National Record again, after setting the National Record in the previous round, took a time of 50.79 in the final.
Behind Bahrain’s Salwa Naser who won the gold in a new Games record time of 50.09 seconds.
Another Indian in the women’s 400m final, Nirmala Sheoran finished fourth in 52.96.
After her win in the Junior Athletics Championship, the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind, complimented Hima, on her accomplishment. Kovind tweeted, “Congrats to our incredible run star Hima Das for winning the 400 m gold in the World Under-20 Championship. This is India’s first ever track gold in a World Championship. An extremely glad moment for Assam and India, Hima; now the Olympic platform beckons!”
The Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal, had also complimented the Eighteen-year-old run ruler.
With the 400m silver, India has now won 33 decorations including 7 gold, 9 silver, and 17 bronze.
